‘I Won’t Back Down’ was the nucleus of this entire project. I wanted to record this song in a big beautiful space. When the Church presented itself, that idea turned into something much bigger. In recent years, I’ve often closed my live performances with this song. The sentiment is so universal, and empowering.
Petty was a big influence on me. His was the first rock show I ever attended, and his songs made me want to write my own. There was something so right about singing this in there…it felt cathartic and purposeful, and sums up this whole project for me.
